Last year's trip

July 20, 2013

Topic: Upper Watershed Hydrology in the Eastern Cascades.
Location: Ahtanum watershed, about 30 miles east of Yakima.
Hosted by: Charles Chesney, Hydrologist with WDNR

This trip will take us to the east side of Mt Rainier to look at forest hydrology in the headwater streams of the Ahtanum Watershed.

There are currently 4 stops planned:
  • an extinct volcano,
  • a forest hydrology study site,
  • a long term study site for instream woody debris,
  • a stream avulsion site.
Since we will end in the Yakima area, we may also look at some of the gravel mining and the affects on the riverine habitat in the Yakima River

See the MAP with the site visit locations.

Considering the drive of at least 3 hours each way, some of us are already planning to extend the trip as an overnighter to enjoy the area while we're there.   Consider sticking around to visit a local brewery for tasting and dinner.  See the attachment for more details:

Please send Llyn Doremus an email to RSVP for this event by
July 12th [ llynadele@gmail.com ]

June 2012

Elwha Dam Site Visit

Hosted by: Chris Magirl (USGS) with help from Andy Ritchie,  geomorphologist with the National Park Service

Elwha Dam, constructed 1913, is undergoing deconstruction that
started September 2011. The flow of the river has been diverted
from the section of the dam on the left hand side of the photo to
the spillway on the right, bringing down the level of the reservoir
Lake Aldwell several feet to facilitate the dam removal.
